** FRIDAY THE 13th: Jason Voorhees' next story is set to be told by SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT reboot filmmaker Mike P. Nelson. Produced by FRIDAY THE 13th franchise owner Horror, Inc., the new Jason Universe project is a bloody short-form vignette titled SWEET REVENGE and it's set as "the centerpiece of the franchise's bold 45th anniversary campaign."
Per the description for SWEET REVENGE, "fans will drop into a chilling weekend in the woods filled with blood-soaked surprises only Jason can deliver." Nelson is writing, directing and producing through his Rockford Road Pictures banner. Production on SWEET REVENGE began earlier this month and the project is set to debut on both the Jason Universe YouTube channel and through a site hosted by Angry Orchard Hard Cider, which is sponsoring the vignette as part of a larger collaboration with the franchise. ** TRAIN TO BUSAN remake: When Entertainment Weekly asked James Wan what's going on with the project that was supposed to come out in 2023, Wan answered, "That's definitely still a passion project of ours. Creatively, it takes place in the same world as TRAIN TO BUSAN. It's happening epidemically around the world. So if TRAIN TO BUSAN is this particular slice of the story in South Korea, we want LAST TRAIN TO NEW YORK to be the one set in America. Everything about it is really exciting. I hope that could get off the ground eventually. Got to be honest with you, I'm not quite sure where it sits right now."
The screenplay for the remake / spin-off was written by Gary Dauberman, who previously wrote the Wan productions such as ANNABELLE and others. Wan and Michael Clear were on board to produce LAST TRAIN TO NEW YORK through their company Atomic Monster. (thanks to JoBlo.com)
** DON'T LOOK INSIDE: Mike Le Han's next psychological horror, DON'T LOOK INSIDE, has set its principal cast before kicking off production this fall in Minnesota. Although plot details are being kept under wraps, the film is described as an "emotionally charged narrative with chilling, franchise-ready mythology," set in the vein of TALK TO ME and SMILE.
Rachel Nichols, Britt Robertson, Missi Pyle, Nelson Lee and Bruce Davison have been cast in writer/director Le Han's upcoming thriller from Chaos Theory Pictures, which is designed to launch a franchise, with a sequel already outlined. (thanks to Deadline.com)

** WHEN EVIL LURKS sequel: Demian Rugna's possession horror film has a sequel in development, according to the director's recent appearance on "La Broma Infinita" from Argentine streaming channel Gelantina; "We have part two written, yes, and we're just waiting for the funding to come through. We have to make some script modifications to make it perfect, but the studio that wants to make it is already there." (thanks to Bloody-Disgusting.com)
** THE STAND: Filmmaker Doug Liman is set to direct and produce a new feature film version of Stephen King's iconic 1978 novel THE STAND for Paramount Pictures. The project will now head to writers to pen an adaptation of what is King's longest single novel, clocking in at 1152 pages. Tyler Thompson will produce.
Intriguingly, Liman and the studio's take on the property is said to be a one-off feature – not a two or three parter – which suggests a massive reduction in scope and scale of the novel. The story follows an epic battle between good and evil after the American population is all but wiped out by a deadly virus, with the narrative focusing on a group of survivors who fight against an Antichrist-like figure named Randall Flagg. (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)

** M3GAN 3.0: M3GAN 2.0 hits theaters later this week, and if the sequel proves to be a hit, it's safe to say that M3GAN 3.0 could very well be on the horizon. At least, that's the hope for Allison Williams. The actress—who plays M3GAN's creator—told THR that while she's not assuming anything just yet, she and the rest of the team are eager for the chance to return.
"We don't want to presume anything, but I would say a lot [of forethought]," Williams said. "That's all I'm going to say. We love to dream; that's why we're all in this business. We have big aspirations of big dreams, and I certainly don't feel like I'm done making these movies with these people and this tonal landscape and the subject matter. So, yeah, I have been dreaming of a third, for sure."
In a separate interview, M3GAN 2.0 director Gerard Johnstone joked that he wouldn't be able to pitch M3GAN 3.0 tomorrow because "I just put every single idea I had into M3GAN 2.0." That said, Johnson added that he "would not be surprised if there's another five of these movies. So, who knows, maybe I'll come back for the fifth one." (thanks to JoBlo.com)

** Blumhouse buys SAW: Blumhouse has acquired the rights to all future SAW films, shows and other properties featuring the murderous, torture-loving Jigsaw. The company paid an undisclosed amount for the part of the franchise currently owned by producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg. In statements, Koules said it felt like "the right time to pass the baton," while Burg said he wanted to "move on and tell new stories."
Lionsgate, which has released all 10 films in the series to the tune of more than $1 billion at the global box office, will continue to be a partner in the property. It will also retain its existing 50% ownership stake in and distribution of future installments. With the deal, the franchise makes its way back to James Wan, who directed the original, blood-soaked SAW in 2004. Wan's Atomic Monster label merged with Blumhouse in 2024.
"SAW holds a special place in my heart," Wan said, adding, "coming back to this world with a fresh perspective is both thrilling and deeply personal. For me, this will mark a significant creative return to the SAW franchise for the first time since the early days, and I'm very much looking forward to embracing the original spirit whilst pushing the legacy forward in bold, unexpected ways." (thanks to Variety.com)
** MINDHUNTER: Star Holt McCallany has heard that the series could return as three two-hour movies; "I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it's just a chance," McCallany told CBR. "I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts."
McCallany continued, "I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all. I would love it if it were to return. I think, like I said, you know, he gave me a little bit of hope when I had that meeting with him, but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align. The good news is that we're at Netflix with THE WATERFRONT, and those movies would also be for Netflix. So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. And, you know, that's a big question mark."
Fincher has previously said that MINDHUNTER is a "very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn't attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment. I don't blame them, they took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to do MANK the way I wanted to do it and they allowed me to venture down new paths with THE KILLER. It's a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness. The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways." (thanks to JoBlo.com)

** HATCHET 5: During an interview on the Talks from the Crypt podcast, Adam Green revealed there are behind-the-scenes issues. Asked if there's any news on HATCHET 5, Green said;
"Nope. Look, it's always a possibility. I can't get into all of the minutiae because it would take up six more hours, but the long story short is, once we can make the movie with different entities at the top level behind the scenes, then I'll be interested in doing 5. But things need to change. That's probably enough; people can make of that what they want. The creative team is still very much a happy family and would love to do it, but... we need to be under new management, maybe that's the best way to put it. The diplomatic way to put it. I think the old management knows at this point, I'm not kidding when I keep saying I'm not going to do it. So we'll see what happens." He confirmed that he gets calls all the time about getting the new sequel going, but it's not going to happen until these behind-the-scenes issues are cleared up. (thanks to Joblo.com)

GOREZONE 27th Anniversary!
Twenty seven years ago, the Internet was totally different. There was no Facebook, no Instagram, no Twitter, no Smartphones... actually most people had never "surfed" the world wide web. Back in June 1998, I decided to start GOREZONE because of the lack of coverage for the horror genre on the Internet. There was tons of sites dedicated to STAR WARS and STAR TREK, yet apart from a few good horror sites such as HorrorMovies.com and HouseofHorrors.com, the net was leaving me wanting for more. GOREZONE was born as the first web site dedicated to daily horror news. 27 years later GOREZONE is still alive, independant and true to its original concept. Never sold out. Never gave up.
Twenty seven years is a very long time. Not surprisingly I remember the first day, working on my computer, creating the images in Photoshop and layout in Pagemill. I'd love to thank all the readers and everyone who helped the site through all these years! It means a lot to me. Thank you for believing in GOREZONE and making it the #1 source for bloody daily horror news!

** THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: A massive bidding war has broken out for the rights to THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE franchise with as many as five to eight studios/streamers vying for rights to the franchise.
There are no clear frontrunners at present, but new creative parties have reportedly emerged with passionate new takes on the project and will pitch their visions starting Monday. Amongst those in the running are a Taylor Sheridan-produced take; a Jordan Peele-produced take via his Monkeypaw label at Universal, and a Neon-backed take which will see Bryan Bertino directing LONGLEGS filmmaker Oz Perkins producing and both co-writing.
Meanwhile producer Roy Lee has two pitches – a film set up at Netflix, and an A24 TV series that would have J.T. Mollner and Glen Powell producing (but Powell not starring). Exurbia Films is the primary production company behind the franchise with Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel and Kim Henkel as producers. (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)

** SAW now at Blumhouse: In a deal that will bring James Wan back in touch with the mega horror IP he created, we hear from several sources that Blumhouse is acquiring the perspective rights to Twisted Pictures' portion of the SAW franchise. In short, Blumhouse essentially is taking over the IP's ownership from Twisted's Mark Burg and Oren Koules. Lionsgate will continue to be involved as a partner and, in fact, owns 50% of the franchise.
As of this time, there isn't development on another movie yet. Wan directed the first SAW movie in 2004 and co-wrote with Leigh Whannell. Wan remained an EP on remaining Saw movies. The first SAW movie opened to $18.6 million and made $56M domestic, $104M worldwide.
There was a SAW XI in development that was previously scheduled for September 2025. However, the project was stalled; Lionsgate and the franchise producers didn't see eye to eye on the 11th movie. SAW XI scribes Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan had turned in a draft in 2024, with SAW X director Kevin Greutert attached to direct. (thanks to Deadline.com)
** THE EXORCIST BELIEVER sequels: Filmmaker Mike Flanagan says those keen to see his take on THE EXORCIST franchise are going to have to wait. Last year, the news came that he would be doing a whole new take on the franchise, with Universal scheduling the film for a March 13th 2026, release.
Popping up on Tumblr this week, the filmmaker was responding to fan questions when the project came up and he was asked if it was still moving forward. Flanagan says his current priority is his CARRIE series for Amazon MGM Studios, and with that Stephen King adaptation still in the early stages it means any other project is a while off: "Production hasn't started, we need to finish CARRIE first. No way it's coming out next March. Nothing to worry about though."
Universal spent $400 million in 2021 to land a new THE EXORCIST trilogy from 2018's HALLOWEEN director David Gordon Green. The first film however crashed and burned, THE EXORCIST BELIEVER debuting in 2023 to bad reviews and just $137 million at the box office. (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)

** MA sequel: Octavia Spencer is set to return for a sequel to 2019s psychological horror feature MA at Blumhouse Productions. Announcing the news as part of the Business of Fear event, Jason Blum says: "MA has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia's iconic performance as Ma. Ma likes to say 'don't make me drink alone,' so we're thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round."
Spencer starred in the $61 million-grossing original as Sue Ann, a lonely woman who befriends a group of teens and allows them to use her basement for parties. But things take a sinister turn as she implements a series of strict rules for the kids hanging out at her house, including never allowing them upstairs. Juliette Lewis and Luke Evans co-starred. ** Jason Universe: Horror, Inc. has unveiled a first look at the new design for hockey mask-wearing serial killer Jason Voorhees across the planned multi-platform expansion of the FRIDAY THE 13th franchise. Announced exactly a year ago, the Jason Universe spans multiple projects and include movies, games, merchandise, and TV shows such as A24 and Peacock's CRYSTAL LAKE series.
The new look, revealed exclusively by Adweek, indicates a much more svelte Jason than the various prior films where the character was often played by fairly large, burly guys. This Jason also appears to have some hair, wear sensible shoes and has a taste for earthy brown/green tones across all his clothing as opposed to the navy and black outfits of times past.
"We strive to maintain Jason's original essence, while continuing to move toward the future with a defined look and feel that takes Jason into his next chapter. We're also working with both familiar and fresh franchise voices to strike that balance. We gave Greg our new 13-hole mask and worked together on this full body look that embodies classic Jason. He's a strong, towering and terrifying slasher with a machete, his weapon of choice."
Special effects legend Greg Nicotero contributed to the new look while a new logo was also unveiled, time to celebrate the franchise's 45th anniversary this past week. Horror, Inc. chief marketing officer Sheri Conn says they are "actively developing a slate under the Jason Universe banner that spans new movies, gaming, immersive experiences, collectibles and more" and they are "actively reimagining" what the overall next chapter of the franchise could be. Toronto-based genre film specialist Raven Banner is also on board to handle world sales and will offer buyers a sneak peek of the film at the Cannes Marche du Film. Howden, who also wrote and directed GUNS AKIMBO starring Daniel Radcliffe and Samara Weaving, wrote and directed the sequel which was filmed with assistance from Creative Sask last summer in Regina, Canada. The film features the return of the original cast – Milo Cawthorne, Kimberley Crossman, James Blake, Sam Berkley and Daniel Cresswell - plus a few cameos throughout.
DEATHGASM which debuted at SXSW 2015 and went onto win a slew of horror awards including the Palm D'Gore at Knoxville Horror Film Festival, tells the story of two high-school metalheads, Brodie (Cawthorne) and Zakk (Blake), who form a band called Deathgasm. One day, while delving into some dark magic to escape their mundane lives, the duo unwittingly summon an evil entity called The Blind One.
In the sequel, Brodie finds himself unemployed, single and without ambition. But when he learns that 'NoizeQuest', a battle-of-the-bands competition is coming to his town, he decides to reform his band in order to find redemption and, most importantly, get his ex-girlfriend Medina back. Only problem, his drummer Giles is missing an arm, and the rest of his band is, well... dead. Thankfully Brodie still has the pages of The Black Hymn, so raising his bandmates from the beyond is as easy as playing a little tune...
Matthew Kiichi Heafy best known as the frontman of the chart-topping metal band TRIVIUM, composed the film's score infusing his signature musical style into the movie, taking the franchise to new heights.
"I'm so thrilled to be continuing the DEATHGASM universe and bring the evil-crushing power of metal to new and existing audiences," said Howden. "Like we saw with Eddie Munson in STRANGER THINGS not all heroes wear capes. Some wear Anthrax tees and denim vests."
Andrew T. Hunt, managing partner at Raven Banner, said: "We're big fans of Jason here at Raven Banner. DEATHGASM still remains one of the most beloved titles, building up a cult following year after year."
"The sequel promises to not only satisfy the cravings of die-hard fans of the original film, like myself, but it will also rip out the hearts of a whole new wave of viewers," said Exec Producer B.J. McDonnell. "You can also anticipate a soundtrack that will rock harder than ever, a hallmark of the DEATHGASM franchise."

** WEAPONS and BARBARIAN linked: One of the most raved-about reveals at CinemaCon this year was the first footage from BARBARIAN breakout director Zach Cregger's new film WEAPONS which opens in August.
Warner Bros. Pictures has started the marketing campaign for the movie and while there aren't yet any official stills with cast, or any trailers for that matter, the studio has launched a website named MaybrookMissing.net disclosing some more information about the film's story.
Written like a newspaper article, a description goes into the film's central mystery in which seventeen children wake up and voluntarily walk out the front door of their homes at 2:17am one morning – inexplicably disappearing without a trace. The site also includes a text link to another article headlined "Underground Prison Discovered in Rental Home" which goes into an article going into the events of 2022's BARBARIAN.
This has led to plenty of speculation that the films are connected with WEAPONS set in the same universe as BARBARIAN, and could even potentially tie-in to that film somehow. Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich and Benedict Wong star in WEAPONS which opens in cinemas on August 8th. (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)

** A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET PART 2: From Jack Sholder: "I just spent last week on the Warners lot working on the restoration of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2. The remastered 4K picture off the original 35mm negative looks fantastic, and I was able to make adjustments and corrections only possible thanks to the incredible digital tools now available. The original mono mix from 42 years ago(!) was brought into Dolby Atmos and blew me out of my seat. I heard things in Chris Young's score I never knew were there and that, combined with some added sound fx work, really lift the film into another dimension.
We were careful not to change the look and feel of the film, but even the rather lame scene with the exploding parakeet felt like THE BIRDS. The whole experience was like someone restoring an old Renaissance painting and finally seeing the amazing blue that the painter had used, or the cat now seen hiding behind the table, although in this case, those colors and sounds had never fully been seen before but were implicit in the material and now are explicit. Warners also shot some interviews for the new release and I got to see my old buddy Robert Englund whose performance now jumps off the screen. Keep an eye out for announcements of the release from WB. The new version really needs to be experienced by new fans and re-experienced by old ones"
** AMERICAN PSYCHO remake: Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino appeared on screen during Lionsgate's presentation at CinemaCon on Tuesday and teased his new adaptation of author Bret Easton Ellis' AMERICAN PSYCHO. In a video speech to the crowd, the director said: "We are really working hard to bring to the screen a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' AMERICAN PSYCHO, a book that I deeply love that is something that influenced me so much."
He then confirmed that Scott Z. Burns, the film's writer, is "doing an incredible job" and that "the script is coming out very handsomely." He also confirmed that conversations are underway with "very exciting performers to play the leads."
Frenesy Films is backing the project which is expected to be a whole new take on the novel, as opposed to a remake of director Mary Herron's previous film adaptation in 2000 starring Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman. (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)

A writer's room for the series is set to open soon with the title being produced by Amazon MGM Studios for its Prime Video service.
King's first novel and published in 1974, the story follows a shy girl, tormented by an abusive mother and bullies at school, who develops telekinetic powers and takes revenge on her tormentors. The property was adapted into the famed 1976 Brian DePalma film which scored a widely panned 1999 sequel, and was followed by a mixed-reviewed remake of the original in 2013. The film stars Titus Welliver, Jocelin Donahue, Judah Mackey, Aurora Perrineau, and Brady Hepner. ABRAHAM'S BOYS will be released in theaters later this year following its world premiere at the 2025 Overlook Film Festival on Saturday, April 5.

Writer-Director Natasha Kermani commented, "It was a joy to bring Joe Hill's dark, gothic story to the screen on location in California, with a fantastic Los Angeles cast and crew, and I'm so excited to now be able to share the film with audiences all over the world alongside my friends at RLJE Films and Shudder."
